An integral part of Tokyo’s transport system, bicycles are used mainly for short-distance commutes, weaving their way among pedestrians and cars, on sidewalks and roads and the occasional purpose-built bicycle lane, with a casual disregard for any systemic notions of roadcraft, on their way to the local supermarket, the corner convenience store, the neighborhood elementary school, or the nearest train station where they dutifully join stacks of other bikes in designated parking areas or rebelliously claim vacant roadside spaces.
