Architecture is man’s great sense of himself embodied in a world of his own making. It may rise as high in quality only as its source because great art is great life.

- Frank Lloyd Wright

The world’s great cities are in part defined by their architecture: their landmark civic and corporate buildings, their iconic monuments and stadiums, their engineering masterworks. When these structures reimagine the traditional notions of their forms, they become as much sculptural works of public art as functioning edifices. Since the reconstruction that began after the Second World War, and particularly since the build-up to the 1964 Games of the XVIII Olympiad, Tokyo has and continues to construct its own striking collection of such architectural masterworks.
