Despite the rain, young women wait their turn in a Shinjuku alley for a consultation with a popular fortune teller. It’s a common scene in Tokyo, one that has apparently played out since edo times. Today, the generally older women and men who tell fortunes do a brisk trade in their tiny shopfronts, shopping mall cubicles or evening sidewalk tables as they unveil the destinies of clients who are interested in resolving matters of the heart or are focused on careers.
